Some console repair shops can now add ‘pest exterminators’ to their service list.Â
They’ve been encountering cockroaches in PlayStation 4’s, which they say create an ideal environment for the pests.
The cockroaches crawl into the console through its large vents, and when their bodies rubs against a high voltage component inside, it zaps them – breaking the console.

The top two ways to know if a console is infested with cockroaches is to look to see them crawl in and out or spot traces of cockroach poop, or smell them
Experts say the best way to check our console is to look for them crawling in and out.
You can also look for traces of cockroach feces, particularly on the console’s vents.
It’s also possible to smell them, as they ‘smells like dog poop’
Cockroaches are attracted to the PlayStation 4’s (PS4) because of its dark, warm interior environment. Â
Steve Porter, the owner of TronicsFix, an electronics repair store near Portland, Oregon, told the DailyMail.com that he encounters cockroach infested PS4’s on an almost daily basis.Â
He estimates that about 40 per cent of the repairs he does contain cockroaches.Â
While there aren’t many cockroaches in Oregon, TronicsFix accepts repairs from across the US, and some regions have more cockroaches than others. Â
‘We also get some from rental companies that rent them out down in the South, so there’s more cockroaches down there,’ said Porter.
Porter says that he’s also seen cockroach infestations in the Xbox One, the PlayStation 4 Slim, and the PlayStation 4 Â Pro – but the standard PlayStation 4 is the most afflicted model.Â
‘The vents are large, so if the console is on the floor the roaches crawl right in there,’ said Porter.
Porter explained that the power supply inside gets warm, and the cockroaches are attracted to the heat.Â

‘They smell bad – they’re bug, they poop all over so it smells really bad,’ said Porter.Â

Once inside, the cockroaches can cause the console to break.Â
They crawl around amongst high voltage components in tight spaces, and if their bodies rub their bodies in the wrong two places and get zapped, then your console wont turn on anymore.Â
To prevent the problem from happening in the first place, Porter recommends trying to keep cockroaches out of the house in the first place.Â
But if you live in an apartment building where other people might have cockroaches in their homes, Porter recommends using mosquito netting around the console to stop cockroaches from getting in.Â
According to Porter, there are very few repair shops that will accept to repair cockroach infested consoles.
‘If you send it to Sony, they will send it back to you – that’s why we get so many here,’ said Porter.Â
In New York City, a notorious cockroach haven, console repair store XCubicle also exterminates the bugs from PlayStation 4’s.Â

Susan Che, the project manager at XCubicle, told the DailyMail.com that they come across about one case a week. Â
While the store has spotted devices in other consoles, the PS4 is the ‘only one that’s the worst because the power supply is right where the vent is,’ said Che.
She said that the standard PS4 is the only device that’s built this way, so it’s a design flaw – but with the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro models, this design has been revised.Â
When XCubicle employees encounter cockroach infested consoles, they place the console inside a plastic bag and spray it with Combat, a roach killing product.Â
Then, a day or two later, they check to see if all the cockroaches are dead.Â
If some are still alive, they take the bag outside and use a super powerful blower to target the crevices of the device, blowing off all the cockroaches.Â
